The son of Franklin James (a Civil War veteran) and Fanny (Hill) Leavitt, born 16 Mar 1879 in Missouri. He died 30 Sept 1954 in Kansas City, MO and is buried in the Ft Leavenworth National Cemetery.
His wife was GRACE G, who was buried alongside him at Leavenworth Nat'l Cemetery. They were married about 1905 [5 yrs in 1910 census]. No known children.
During the Spanish American War, he served in Company F, 20th Kansas Infantry, from 5 May 1898 to 28 Oct 1899. He had enlisted as a private, and was promoted several times until reaching the rank of 1st Sgt. He would reenlist with the 4th US Artillery as a private, and promoted to corporal, serving 29 Oct 1900 to 2 July 1901 [Historical Register and Dictionary of the United States Army, Vol 1, pg 622]. He followed this with service in the 28th US Infantry, the 25th Infantry, and with the 6th Infantry (exact dates not known). He also served during World War I. He retired from the US Army on 31 Aug 1941, with a rank of colonel [National Cemetery Interment Control Forms].
