JOHN SEWELL LEAVITT was born in Limerick, Maine on 22 Apr 1843, the son of Thomas and Hannah (Waterhouse) Leavitt. He died in Old Orchard, Maine on 18 Sept 1900, aged 57 yrs, and was buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Saco.
He was married to ALTA MINA CARD on 30 June 1868 in Saco, Maine. She was born in Dover, NH ca Apr 1853 [1900 census]. She died on 9 Aug 1928 [gravestone] in Newton, MA [MA index], and was buried in Laurel Hill. She was the daughter of Sarah E MacDuffee, who is buried in the same plot.
John was listed as a travelling salesman in the 1880 census, and was a machinist in Old Orchard by 1900. His brother, Edwin B Leavitt, also served in the War.
The 1900 shows Alta had 2 children, only 1 still living (though 1910 shows her with "ch 1/1"). Only one has been found in records:
