GEORGE E LEAVITT was born 27 Dec 1840 in NH, perhaps Chichester. He died on 11 Aug 1903 in Fargo, Cass, North Dakota, and was buried in Riverside Cemetery in Fargo.
He married on 6 Jan 1866 to MARTHA SMITH. She was born in East Concord, NH on 26 Apr 1847. She died after 1934. She remarried, some time after the 1910 census (she was living in Seattle, WA at this time), to Thomas Higgenson.
George was listed as a resident of Newton, MA when he enlisted with the 32nd Mass Infantry. He was wounded during the Battle of Fredericksburg, VA on 13 Dec 1862, receiving a gunshot wound in the left leg.
He left Massachusetts after the war and went west to Kansas. George and family lived in Rochester, Minnesota during 1880 census, where he worked as a carriage maker. They were in Fargo, North Dakota by 1890. He was a carpenter in 1900.
George and Martha had two children, both daughters:
I. CORA MAY LEAVITT, b. 3 Oct 1867 in Kansas; d. 8 July 1894
II. GERTRUDE L LEAVITT, b. 17 Mar 1869 in Kansas; d. 10 June 1895 at Fargo, ND. She is buried in Riverside Cem, Fargo. She was married to CHARLES H COLE, on 16 Sept 1890. He was b. June 1857 in NY [1900 census]. They had one child: 1. Gertrude L Cole, b. 27 Apr 1895 in ND; d. Jan 1974 [SSDI, last res: Fargo]. She is buried in Riverside Cemetery. She may not have married, as she is listed as a Cole on SS Death Index.
